As a parent, I like the books too. I read the first 3 books and found that they are funny. However, you must get prepared that there are many baby English (as Junie B was only a new kindergartener to start with) and intentional grammatical/spelling mistakes (e.g. "a pology" instead of "apology", "holded" instead of "held".... a lot of other examples). You must warn your kids about this. So I will not ask my kids to read them until they are at mid primary. But the story is interesting and even higher grades (e.g. my nephew at p.4) loves it. So technically the reading level is about P1 but I prefer to wait until later stage when my kids' English knowledge is more solid and can tell right or wrong. Alternatively, I am considering reading the books to my kids and correcting some mistakes along the way.
Not sure. May be try Nate the Great detective series. Very interesting. About same level as Junie B but need more 'thinking' to solve mysteries. My daughter likes detectives stories and she likes this series very much (I love too). Boys should also love it as the detective, Nate, is a boy, and there is nothing girlish. Hope this help.
The bookclub promotion also included Ready Freddy. I have read a few Freddy books to my daughter. But she is not too fond of it, at least she did not ask me to read more. I will try it again for my son later. May be boys would like it.
But beware that Junie B Jones series is really really too easy for a P4. Once you caught their interest and confident, introduced them to higher standard or close to their ability.
Junie B is rather a P1 book. They can read these once in a while....but ensure you also push them to reach a higher standard (the standard suitable for their age)
