Woman declared 'dead' awakens just before doctors harvest her organs
Imagine waking up to see operating room lights and doctors standing over you, armed with scalpels and other operating tools.
According to Fox News.com, that's exactly what happened to 41-year-old Colleen Burns, who had arrived at the emergency room at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center in Syracuse, N.Y., over a week earlier suffering from a drug overdose, Counsel and Heal reported. Mistakenly believing Burns to be dead, doctors at the center were about to harvest the woman's organs for transplant, before she opened her eyes.
The 2009 incident is detailed in a recently revealed report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which also lists the series of mistakes by doctors that led to the terrible event.

The Tarrant County medical examiner said Martha Perez died Wednesday in an Arlington wreck that officials suspect involved a drunk driver. Doctors reportedly declared Perez brain-dead, but the hospital declined to confirm their diagnosis due to patient privacy laws, according to MyFoxDFW.com.
Perez was a registered organ donor, and doctors told her family they were prepared to harvest her organs for donations.
“But she still has heart and lung functions,” family member Juan Martinez told MyFoxDFW.com. “They took her off life support, and she was still breathing.”

Mike O’Connor had just been told that his daughter was brain dead.
Brittany had been in the hospital for six days. One end of a thick blue tube was taped to her mouth, the other connected to a respirator, which pushed air into her lungs with a mechanical force that shook her chest up and down.
Each day, he’d come to her bedside to hope and pray she would open her eyes. And that’s where he was, by her bed, when a policeman entered her room at the intensive care unit at Fresno community hospital.
Mike didn’t believe that Brittany was dead. Forcefully, he told the care team that she was alive, that she was fighting, that they just wanted her heart, her lungs, her kidneys for donation. He feared that the hospital would remove her from life support and that Donor Network West would procure her organs.
He thought he was fighting for his daughter’s life.
A boy in Alabama astounded doctors when he woke up just a day before his life support was to be ended, and his organs harvested.
Trenton McKinley, 13, suffered seven skull fractures when he was involved in a dune buggy accident with a friend in March.
He underwent several rounds of emergency surgery, suffered a cardiac arrest, and was medically ‘dead’ for 15 minutes.
His mother, Jennifer, told of the heart-breaking ordeal, believing her son would not survive.
Doctors told her he would never be normal again, saying that the oxygen deprivation would affect him so badly, that he would be “a vegetable” if he even survived.
The teenager was declared brain dead and was barely breathing, and so his mother decided to donate his organs to other children in need of transplants.
However, the day before his life support was set to be switched off, Trenton began to show signs of brain activity. He began to breathe on his own, and when he woke, was able to speak in full sentences.
