if you are in aust now and you are now leaving the country, you dont have to do anything. If u want to travel overseas after the expiry date of the current visa, you will have to apply for the Resident Return Visa (RRV). There are two types of RRV, one is 5 years and one is 3 months. If you live in aust for more than 2 years in the last 5 years, you are eligible to apply for the 5 years RRV. You can refer to http://www.immi.gov.au/migrants/residents/155/eligibility.htm for more info
I am the same problem. My PR will be expired in May, need to apply resident return visa. My husband need to go biz trip, we are not sure how long does it take. He works in Sydney and our kids study at local school. Anyone can give advice.
my colleagues just got it last week, he's been here for 5 out of 5 years, so he went to immigration, showing passport and credit card, got the visa immediately.
however, if you don't meet the 2/5 years requirement, you may need to make an appointment with immigration, they may assess your case before granting you the RRV.
you mentioned your hubby works in Sydney. Is he in Sydney now? how long? if he's been here for 2 years, he can get the RRV without any problem.

So after staying for 2 yrs out of 5, I go apply for the return visa and leave the country. If the return visa has another 5 yrs of expiry, does it mean that I hv to stay for another 2 yrs again? Do I repeat this again and again? Until when?
